Spontaneity

Spontaneity – Do you embrace it or do you schedule it away?

I’m a spontaneous/live in the moment kind of guy. It’s important to plan and have a schedule, but I’ll be damned if I’ll let a schedule keep me from living and having that “wow” moment.

As a work traveler, my life is scheduled as a norm. Wake up, shower, dress, eat, head to the job, come back to hotel, eat, chill, sleep. What a boring routine.

On the road I don’t have just a ton of options to be spontaneous, but little things make me happy and keep my days interesting.

Take tonight for instance. Instead of just hanging close to the hotel, I headed off to eat about a half hour from here at a place recommended by someone I was working with today. I didn’t plan to go to this place and never would have found it without asking for something new. It did not disappoint.

Most of my writing is spontaneous as well. Very seldom do I try to schedule writing a poem. The environment around me inspires it. Tonight I was admiring the sliver of moon I could see and the following poem began to form in my brain. It took about 15 minutes to write and made me feel good inside.

There’s a sliver of moon

Hanging ‘neath the stars

It fights for space

With Venus and Mars

And in the cradle

Of shadowed light

There’s a radiance

Soon to be bright

Hold on my love

Your moonbeam will shine

From the heavens

On you so fine

And in your glow

My heart will melt

A puddle of gold

You have smelt

Shape me my love

With your moon fire

And I will be

What you desire

Being spontaneous can also lead to brightening someone’s life as well. When someone pops into your head you haven’t heard from or thought of in a while, a simple text or call might be just what the person needed. Who knows, you might have kept them from walking out a window.

Because I do not have a lot of people in my life or around me most days, I tend to be spontaneous about things that benefit me. However, with another, spontaneity becomes more fun. When was the last time you looked at your other in bed and said, “Screw it, let’s call in sick today?” I don’t recommend doing it often, but think of the fun you two might have on a day like that.

Besides the obvious of staying in bed together all day, what would the two of you do to enjoy the other’s company while throwing caution to the wind?

1. Balloon ride

2. Walk in the park

3. A favorite meal prepared together or out to eat

4. A day trip to the next town over to window shop

5. Drop in on an elderly person who could use the attention and love

6. Finding a secluded spot and be silent together

7. Turn off your phones

8. Massages (might be related to the bed part)

9. A bicycle ride

10. A trip to the zoo

11. A movie

12. Roller Skating

13. Ice skating

14. ?????????

I could keep listing activity after activity, but your spontaneity is yours.

We need structure in our lives, or we might never get anything done; but where would that leave us if that was the only way we lived?

I am slightly envious of those who have figured out how to drop it all and go live in a van. Yes, these people have responsibilities and have to adhere to non spontaneous things to support themselves, but being able to just say “let’s go left at the crossroad” is a level of spontaneity most of us do not have the luxury to do. So, we have to find a spontaneity that fits.

I was so spontaneous that I fell asleep while writing this. Is it that boring? Or is it a mistake to try and write while laying prone in bed?

If I am honest with myself it’s probably a mixture of both.

I really do have a point with this rambling. Don’t be afraid to just do something on a whim. Breaking out of the norm can be exhilarating and rewarding. Don’t plan it, but the next time an idea to do something pops into your head, go chase it.

  1. Like you, I go both ways… when it comes to spontaneity. Some things have to be scheduled–my body won’t forgive missed meals, for instance. And since missing certain meds can kill me, well… I’m quite organized about that. Writing works in a similar way–longer words get plotted, shorter ones get inked by the sit of my pants (or pantless, lol). And every now and again, the muse does whatever she pleases… and I’m just pleased she lets me scribble her wants into words.
