Epiphany

How I enjoy

When my brain cells engage

The epiphany

It’s all the rage

Little victories

Make life grand

On my feet

Today I did land

I figured it out

Simple and neat

But I’d bore you to tears

With my simple feat

Gotta blog about this. You might not care when finished reading, but dangit I had this awesome epiphany today how to overcome a software programmers lack of “want to help attitude.”

It seems every time I ask about software issues or give suggestions, the answer is always “no”. This is said before they even think about the idea.

One of the biggest software weaknesses a company can have is when the developers have no idea how the real world works and thinks in the industry they are programming to serve.

I have a “upgrade features” list that grows every day. It will soon be put into draft form and then developed into a productive letter to the owner on what I believe could be improvements to the software.

By no means is our software bad, but like everything, when you revisit it, you tend to see the shortcomings and ways to improve.

My victory today was a simple thing actually. I wanted a certain type of information sent to my equipment; but the information is hardcoded in the software and would be too difficult to change. My brain engaged as I was driving away from the site and realized that we create a text file to analyze the information. Boom! Go edit the text file and resubmit to get the desired result. It was that easy. Twenty minutes of my time to make the customer happy versus a year waiting on a feature request to be coded? Yea; my thought too.

Well, that’s all I wanted to throw out there. Keep working on your small victories, because they need to be celebrated too.

Phillip
