Today’s Muse

Happy Saturday from the Denver Airport.

The day started not too early; about 5 a.m. If you’re just now rolling out of bed, that might be early to you, but it’s the pain of trying to fly to Great Falls, Montana on a Saturday.

So, I had a couple of inspirations for poems today and thought I’d share a little of what goes through my head. This morning was nice in Texas; high 30s predawn. But, I’m headed to Montana today and on to Wisconsin Wednesday or Thursday (I hope). On the drive to the airport a friend in Wisconsin whom I’ve worked with, sent me a screen capture of her weather app at -20 degrees Fahrenheit. I had to shudder a little, because I scheduled myself to go there this week. Crazy, huh?

Well, my brain got to spinning and thinking of her bundled up in her Carhartt jacket and infinity scarf headed to work this morning and the following lines came to my head. They can be read many ways. Hope you enjoy them.

Then, before I pulled out of Buc-ee’s (best dang gas station and convenience store ever), I received a blog invite from proletaria.org for submissions using monostitch and single line haiku.

I’ve never been one for submitting stuff for publication, and I yet may still partake in the request. I am thankful to them for sending me a personal invite to submit. I had to look up what the monostitch technically was and then I got to thinking about possibilities after looking at some examples.

I often wonder that; what can be said, has been said, and my little snippets of words are there for fun. How many profound ways can we all say the same thing? That is where I struggle as a writer.

But, driving in the dark, dodging 18-wheelers (lorries), and boredom, I wrote the following poems.

Tight

My pants always fit tighter when I think of you.

Drunk

I drink you in with my eyes and I get drunk.

Laugh

The stars of heaven laugh at my earthly hell.

Darkness

The beauty of your darkness is polluted in light.

Kiss

If I kiss you under a half moon, will you love me full?

Rewrite

I re-wrote “Dawn” and renamed it for a monostitch and a haiku.

Freeze

It’s always coldest before the dawn when my thoughts freeze on you.

Freeze

It’s always coldest

When my thought freezes on you

In the prelight dawn

Is or Not?

This i guess could be construed as a monostitch. Not sure, but if you professorial types could confirm, I’d like to know.

Tell

Tell me about you and I’ll tell you about me;

And show you the scars others can’t see.

On the Plane

Then, while in my cramped seat in the plane, these tidbits did appear.

Fly

In the clouds I fly

A winged fish above the land

Sardines in a can

She

She sits across the isle

She has a lovely smile

I try not to stare

At her lovely hair

But then her finger finds her nose

And out come boogers; there she blows

Descend

Ears are popping

Turbulence hopping

Down and down we go

Controlled falling

Connection calling

My bags are stowed below

Without a hitch

Planes I switch

Onward to my goal

Slight delay

At the bay

Only time will take its toll

  1. First, I hope you don’t freeze to death in Montana. Ouch.

Then, I need to say that this post contains some of my favorite poems by you. The first one made me sigh. “Tight” made me roar. “Darkness” made me sigh again… and smile, too.

    Yum, yum!

    1. Thank you. I came prepared for the cold. And I have that face thing (beard) that insulates as well. Lol

I love what can be created and enjoyed in the dark. The light is wonderful for it brings the gardens to life, but creativity abounds when unseen and checked.
